A Little About Burlesque
First of all, let's put it out there, Burlesque is not stripping.
Burlesque started out as a very different art form to the modern interpretation. By strict definition, the term Burlesque is derived from the Italian word burlesco, itself derived from the term burla meaning 'joke, parody, trick'.
That's right, burlesque was often used as a way to parody contemporary art since the 17th century. Back when the art form gained popularity in Britain, around the 1830s, it was often used to parody Shakespearean plays!
Burlesque crossed the ditch from the UK to the USA in 1868. Lydia Thompson of the British Blondes
